Pichetto on Peronism's Future: Stopping Milei Cannot Be the Only Banner

Deputy Miguel Ángel Pichetto called for Peronist reconciliation and the creation of a broad coalition, stating that the movement cannot build its policy solely on opposing President Javier Milei. He emphasized the need to develop a political program of its own.

Buenos Aires, March 9, 2026 - Total News Agency - TNA. National Deputy Miguel Ángel Pichetto, president of the 'Encuentro Federal' bloc in the Chamber of Deputies, spoke again about the future of Peronism and left a definition aimed at ordering the internal debate of that space: 'Peronism cannot have as its only banner stopping Javier Milei.' 'We have to build a world of ideas and analyze reality with rigor,' expressed Pichetto, who also questioned that some leaders now discover the deterioration of wages after having endorsed for months salary agreements below inflation. In this context, Pichetto raised the idea of articulating a broad coalition inspired by the political model that allowed Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to return to power in Brazil, a front that combines sectors of Peronism with other opposition spaces under a scheme that he defines as 'modern, democratic and capitalist.' After the meeting, the legislator stated that the conversation with Cristina Kirchner was 'pleasant' and that both agreed that Peronism needs to reconcile internally and leave behind old disputes. In 2019, Pichetto was a candidate for vice president on the ticket headed by then-President Mauricio Macri, facing precisely the duo formed by Alberto Fernández and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who would end up winning those elections. That political leap was interpreted at the time as a break with Kirchnerism and an approach to the opposition space of 'Juntos por el Cambio.' Having been Macri's running mate against Kirchnerism and now returning to dialogue with Cristina Kirchner is, for many, a sign of that adaptable political style. Thus, as Peronism begins to discuss its future for 2027, Miguel Ángel Pichetto is back at the center of the stage. However, the subsequent path of the Río Negro leader shows a constant displacement between different political spaces, always with the objective of maintaining influence on the national scene. A fact that is often recalled in this context is that even at moments of greatest confrontation with Kirchnerism, Pichetto always opposed promoting the impeachment of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner when the then senator faced judicial requests in the Senate of the Nation. In his message, he also cast a strategic look towards the electoral future by stating that 'there is 2027 if there is political intelligence.' The statements were made in a context of rapprochement with sectors of the Justicialist Party and Kirchnerism, particularly after the meeting he held recently with the former president and current head of the PJ, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, at her home in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Constitución, where she is serving house arrest following the conviction in the case known as 'Vialidad.' According to sources after that meeting, both leaders talked about the possibility of reorganizing Peronism and exploring the construction of a political front capable of competing with the ruling party in the 2027 presidential elections. He clarified that during the meeting, candidacies or electoral endorsements were not discussed, but the general political scenario and the possibilities of building a competitive alternative. The movement has a strong symbolic content if one observes Pichetto's recent political career. A place that, judging by his political path, seems to be the same one he actually only pretended to leave.
